There is a global outbreak of monkeypox in countries where it is not usually found. Monkeypox cases have been reported in BC with evidence of community transmission (not connected to travel). We are regularly updating information and case counts on this page: bccdc.ca/monkeypox
Most cases globally have been in men who identify as having sex with other men. Monkeypox is not known to be sexually transmitted. However, for most people sexual activity involves close, prolonged contact, and that’s how monkeypox is spread. Anyone can get or pass on monkeypox.
We heard from community partners that people are looking for further information about what this outbreak means for socializing and sexual activity. To help address those questions, we have developed a new resource and posted it to the SmartSexResource website: Monkeypox: Safer Socializing and Sex

Safer socializing and sex key messages
- For most people sexual activity involves close, prolonged contact, and that’s how monkeypox is spread. Anyone can get or pass on monkeypox.
- Consider the scenarios you may find yourself in. Situations that involve more skin-to-skin contact, kissing or sexual contact can increase the chances of transmission.
- Be aware of the symptoms of monkeypox. If you have symptoms, see a health care and avoid close, intimate contact and sex with others. If you do have sex, there are some strategies that may reduce the chances of passing on monkeypox.
